With a new global standard approved by IEC , we will no longer have to buy a different charger for different smartphones.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the global assessment body for international standards in all fields of electrotechnology, has just approved an international standard for a mobile device charger that will work on most of the smartphones in the market. This one-size-fits-all charger is in a USB format and has been agreed to by all the major brands including Apple, Motorola, Research in Motion, Qualcomm, Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Samsung.

The global standard will mean multiple benefits to everyone-the manufacturers who will achieve savings in production and packaging (without providing charger as a necessary accessory), the consumers who will no longer have to use multiple chargers for their different smartphones and of course, the environment, as a universal charger will lead to reduction in cell phone-related electronic waste.
