To provide an additional layer of glanceable information at pedestrian crosswalks, intersections in Kankaanpää, Finland are using Välkky traffic indicators to help improve nighttime safety. Areas taking advantage of the Välkky system are less dense, where pedestrians cross infrequently enough for drivers to easily assume there will be none, but frequently enough to present a safety issue at night. The indicators are mounted to existing traffic signage, and are able to detect when a pedestrian is approaching – lighting softly to indicate the presence of  pedestrians to oncoming drivers at a distance.
