Author and entrepreneur John Grant‘s career has involved a substantial amount of trends identification – and derivation of meaning therein. As such, he's in a position to share his approach to the discipline – and what works best. In a recent blog post at Co-Opportunity (the title of Grant's book), he shares some of the methods he has employed in innovation and in interpreting trends. Here are a few:

Cross-pollinate

Identifying the patterns that form trends requires interaction with multiple disciplines – for example, from the apparel manufacturer to the retailer placing orders for merchandise to the analyst seeing what sells and doesn't; ‘seeing' when a shift begins to occur requires visibility across a wide range of the process.
