Richard Branson's expedition will carry out a two-fold educational and scientific purpose, and will serve to help increase public awareness of our impact on marine life.

Virgin Group chairman and billionaire adventurer Sir Richard Branson has recently unveiled a single-person submarine capable of “breaking and setting new world records” as he plans to explore the five deepest parts of the world’s oceans. Branson says his Virgin Oceanic expedition will carry out a two-fold educational and scientific purpose, and will serve to help increase public awareness of our impact on marine life.

NPR reports:

The carbon fiber and titanium craft will be capable of cruising for about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) and can stay down unaided for 24 hours. The sub and its accompanying catamaran cost an estimated $17 million.
