Airbnb And Facebook Use Social Connections To Find You A Place To Crash

Airbnb and Facebook's partnership with Social Connections allows Airbnb users to book more comfortably by tapping to their social graph.

Mobile app Airbnb and Facebook have partnered to facilitate rental searches through your social network, and Facebook’s social graph. Airbnb has added a new filter, named Social Connections, which allows users to identify personal connections in any city on the map. The filter will return places available for rent that have a link between the user and host through a Facebook connection – be they direct Facebook friends, hosts who are friends or friends or who went to school together. Social Connections will also feature any reviews or past visitation history from your Facebook friends and Airbnb employees.

It seems clear that the idea behind this partnership, and behind Social Connections – is to make Airbnb users feel more confident and comfortable with finding places to rent from people with whom they share some form of personal reference. While the idea is smart, we also wonder how many personal references or connections most people will be able to identify at this point in Airbnb’s growth, given the application’s penetration and usage.

We expect that this partnership should make Airbnb users feel more comfortable with the decision to ‘book’ – vs. just browsing for rental eye candy.
