Airbnb, the website where people can list or book any space from a couch to a castle for an overnight stay, is an idea that began in a Moleskine notebook. In this video from the PSFK NYC Conference, co-founder Joe Gebbia, talks about how he started by renting out an air mattress in his San Francisco apartment to renting a variety of spaces in over 182 countries around the world.

In this video, Joe explains:

  • How casually-jotted down ideas in their Moleskine notebooks have provided most of the company’s structure and creative solutions
  • The personal experiences of participating in the Airbnb marketplace that aided in troubleshooting and developing the business
  • Why timing when launching a new community or facet to an already existing business is important
  • How to harness seemingly unrelated ideas in order to reinvigorate a business stuck in the ‘trough of sorrow’
