A lamp that doubles as a houseplant is a new twist on sustainable and environmentally friendly design.

This design for an interior lighting fixture combines a lamp with a plant for those short on space, new to gardening, or fond of quirky household objects. Created by Emily Paul, the Sprout Living Lamp features a base and shade made from found materials and a Succulent Terrarium living inside. These types of plants are sturdy and don’t need much watering,  perfect for the unaccustomed gardener.

With the lamp shade on, it emits a warm glow as the light shines through the plant. With it off, the efficient LED bulb creates a bright light. The Sprout Living Lamp is a finalist in inhabitat’s Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition, in partnership with Philips.
