Luis Carlos Inacio de Matos from the Univeristy of Beira Interior, Portugal, has created a project called the wi-GO, a Kinect hack that enables a cart to follow a shopper around. By adding a laptop and Kinect technology to the cart, the robot system uses motion sensors to detect and avoid obstacles, can recognize the person to follow, and aid in carrying their shopping.

This would be of great benefit to the elderly and people with physical disabilities as it would improve their mobility, integration and quality of life. The video below shows the difficulties a person in a wheelchair faces when trying to navigate a shopping cart into a store and around the aisles. It also demonstrates the usefulness of this project in that particular situation.
