Using only U.S. data (RIAA revenue figures), Digital Music News created thirty pie charts representing the revenue contribution from various formats, between the years 1980-2010. Click on the animated gif below for a year-by-year shift as the LP, cassette, CD slowly lose ground to a newer format. To be expected, downloaded singles and albums are gaining traction on CDs 49.1% of the pie.
