Apple knows how to cater to its market. The iOS5 for Japan, one of the most earth-quake-prone countries in the world, is to come with an early earthquake warning feature.

In the latest developer build of iOS 5 — the upcoming operating system refresh for Apple's fleet of mobile products — 9to5 Machas found a new feature exclusively for Japanese iPhone users: an earthquake warning alert.

By flicking on the early notification alerts under system settings, a user in Japan would get a warning about an earthquake — like the devastating one that killed 16,000 people earlier this year — up to two minutes before it occurred.

The feature gets its information from the country's online earthquake warning system. As one of the most earthquake-prone nations on the planet, Japan has some seriously advanced technology to detect upcoming ‘quakes. Mark Brown/Wired UK.
