The 1K House is a joint-research initiative between the Department of Architecture and the Center for Real Estate.

Architects from MIT have created the first prototype from the Institute's 1K House project, a research initiative is to improve the plight of the world’s poor with respect to their housing needs and attempt to build low-cost homes.

‘Pinwheel House' was designed by Ying Chee Chui, a graduate of MIT’s Department of Architecture, and has been constructed in Mianyang, in Sichuan Province, China. It features hollow brick walls with steel bars for reinforcement, wooden box beams, and is intended to withstand a magnitude 8.0 earthquake.
