TED presenter Gary Lauder rethinks how traffic controls can play a role in saving fuel.

Venture capitalist Gary Lauder has re-thought the need for standard signalized and un-signalized traffic intersections, in light of a study finding that roundabouts, like the ones in the UK, may prove more energy and cost efficient. An analysis of 24 traffic lights converted into roundabouts revealed that drivers save time, money, and fuel because roundabouts require less braking and acceleration. Furthermore, accidents were shown to drop by 40%.
