Disney has introduced a new range of iPad peripherals called ‘AppMATes’. These toys have integrated sensors on the bottom, helping them interact with a dedicated iPad app that lets children explore the virtual worlds of their favorite Disney characters. The first toys to be released are from Cars 2, and when the miniature figures are placed on the tablet screen, the free app automatically detects it and becomes like a virtual play mat.

Children can take part in races, complete missions, upgrade their car or explore the scenic location of Radiator Springs. The iPad can differentiate between the range of available characters and children will hear different pieces of narration and dialogue depending on the vehicle they’re playing with. Children who don’t own one of the physical toys will still be able to use the app by taking “Paper Lightning” for a test drive. There are sure to be new apps and toys based on other popular Disney films in the future.
