Swedish furniture retail store will create a 26-acre community that will include 1,200 homes.

The massive 26-acre site next to London's Olympic Park in the UK will be an environmentally friendly suburb built by the Swedish furniture chain, Ikea. The suburb in Strand East, located in East London, will include 1,200 residential homes, a 350-room hotel, 480,000 square feet of offices and also shops and restaurants. The Ikea suburb will be surrounded by two canals on both sides and hopes to have a water-taxi service and a floating cocktail bar.

Previously covered on PSFK, IKEA also plans to build a school, medical facility and vehicles and garbage will be navigated via underground tunnels. Further details have not been confirmed, but demolition has already begun on the site and the construction is expected to be completed as early as 2013.
