The White House has proposed to improve cars' gasoline mileage to 54.5 mpg by 2025, a plan that is under Congressional scrutiny.

The Obama Administration hopes to finalize a proposal by next summer. Regulations would go into place by 2017, and aim to require that fuel efficiency standards are raised progressively over the next fourteen years. The Guardian.
