Why are African men often portrayed as violent, machine gun-toting rebels?

In an ode to the Western World, this short video featuring Benard, Brian, Derrick, and Gabriel aims to dispel the way African men are depicted in Hollywood films. Directed and edited by Joe Sabia, changing perceptions is the main focus of the ‘Stop the Pity, Unlock the Potential‘ campaign by non-profit organization, Mama Hope.

Speaking aloud, the four Kenyan men say “if people believed only what they saw in movies, they would think we are all warlords who love violence.” Instead they wanted to share their own stories – one of truth and not the over-sensationalized or one-dimensional messaging permeating the big screen. We hope the series can ignite a dialogue that re-imagines Africa not only as a poverty-stricken, war-ravaged continent but vibrant countries full of people we can relate to.
