Mind-Controlled Robot Brings Virtual Mobility To The Paralyzed

A team of Swiss scientists have demonstrated that a paralyzed person can control a robot by thought alone, giving hope that someday immobilized people will be able to interact with their surroundings through pseudo-avatars. The scientists began by capturing the electrical signals emitted by a paralyzed patient’s brain when he lifted his fingers. The signals captured in this process were then transmitted and successfully replicated by a foot-tall robot nearby. The scientist anticipate that by someday creating a robot complete with a camera and screen, paralyzed users will be able to extend their virtual presence to places that are difficult to reach in a wheelchair.
