EL James hit it big with 'Fifty Shades of Gray,' but other independent, self-published authors usually aren't so lucky.

While self-publishing can be lucrative, like for EL James, whose self-published ‘Fifty Shades Of Gray’ has been successful she received a six-figure advance for a movie deal, the average self-published author made only $10,000 last year. In a survey of 1,007 self-published authors, half made less than $500 on their titles. Guardian
