AR App Lets Users Scan Moles To See If They Are Cancerous
Users can self-examine moles for melanoma using Doctor Mole.
Doctor Mole is a smartphone app that allows users to check their moles for melanoma. The skin cancer app uses augmented reality technology to identify any irregularities in the size, shape, color, and border of the mole. It analyses the data in real-time and provides ‘risk’ level for each of the characteristics. Users can also set up automatic reminders to checkup on any spot and compare photos to help track any changes to the mole.
The app allows users to self-examine themselves in the convenience of their own home. Nevertheless, the developer of Doctor Mole, Mark Shippen, stresses that the app will never be a substitute for a real doctor and factors such as the image processing, shadows, poor camera quality, and poor lighting, can influence the accuracy of the app.
