Robot Shines To People Are Smiles [Video]

The Smile-Bot aims to instill a sense of happiness in those around it.

We Are Matik‘s ‘Smile-Bot’ is a wooden box with four holes cut out in the middle and smiling faces on top that change color when curious people stick their heads through the holes. It was created to “instill a sense of happiness in those around it.”

The structure offers a glimpse into another ‘world’, which is described as “the home planet of the Smile-Bot”. When people insert their head and smile, the face on top changes from its default sad blue to a “happier” color and triggers a sonic harmonization. If four people smile at the same time, the ‘Ultra-Smile Mode’ triggers lights, sound effects, and the appearance of a rainbow inside.

We Are Matik developed a custom application to interface with four cameras mounted inside the Smile-Bot, which monitor people’s faces using facial recognition technology and a custom smile-detecting algorithm. An array of color-changing LEDs react to each person’s smile and four 7-segment LED counters were used to display the number of smiles collected. You can check out the Smile-Bot in the video below:
