Guardian Witness is a new way for the general public to submit their own news stories, photos and videos to the media group, with some of the best submissions being featured in The Guardian.

The app actually has “assignments” available for users to access, normally following a certain theme that is popular at the time. This covers news, sport, culture and lifestyle, with the assignments changing each week as set by the editors. The service could also prove useful for breaking news on a scale that makes it difficult for reporters to cover effectively.

With videos and images being so easy to capture on mobile phones, they are expected to be the most prevalent type of submissions. The app itself is also a great way to encourage user submitted content, as traditional publishing businesses start to move towards different business models.
