There are plenty of meat replacements on the shelves, but interest in them from a meat-eating audience has never really taken off. That hasn’t stopped one company from trying to stir things up by releasing the first vegan, gluten- and soy-free, non GMO meat alternative.

Neat was never intended to be a business, it was simply created to solve a problem. That problem was actually the combination of a number of factors, including high cholesterol, a heart attack within the family, a vegetarian wife, and kids who were not comfortable with the idea of eating animals.

Despite all of these problems, the Lapp family still wanted to eat as a family and enjoy weekly occasions like Taco night. This inspired Laura Lapp – one of the co-founders – to create an alternative that tasted better than the existing products out there, without the long list of unsightly ingredients.

Available in three flavors – Mexican Mix, Italian Mix and Original – Neat will officially debut at the Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore on September 26th. You can also find the meat alternative for sale in the US on and in select grocery stores.

A 5.75oz bag will retail for $3.99, comparable to one pound of ground beef when prepared.
