Brooklyn-based artist Juan Fontanive creates wall-mounted flipbook machines filled with drawings, paintings and collages of birds. The animated sculptures contain hand-painted imagery and each machine is hand-assembled by Fontanive using found parts from clocks and bicycles.

The pages “fall in neat layers in the manner of a paper fountain” so it appears as though the birds are in flight. Signed and numbered limited editions of two machines, Ornithology and Colibri, are available to purchase from the New Museum for $7,000. You can check them out in the videos below:
