Mobile signals and internet connectivity cannot penetrate this steel-framed structure.

ON/OFF is a temporary installation that houses an electromagnetic signal free-zone. Once you step into this cage, you will be disconnected from any mobile reception and Wi-Fi signals – you are basically entering a parallel universe where technology is not the focal point of life.

The designers of ON/OFF saw an opportunity to remove oneself from connectivity, and nailed it. In collaboration with the University of Melbourne, creative studio Sibling disrupted communication instead of enhancing it. ON/OFF features an enclosed electrified mesh that blocks out signals to create the “cold spot”. In addition, mirrors were installed on the outside of the cage to repel signals as well.

The exhibition took place earlier this year as part of the ABP Alumni Survey Series, which featured various workshops, seminars, and collaborative opportunities. Considering the difficulties of escaping our digital-heavy society, ON/OFF gives seekers a sanctuary where they can re-connect with themselves.
