Flexible crystalline screen could change the world of wearable technology

The Japanese company SEL has developed a new flexible high-resolution crystalline screen that can wrap around extremely tight corners, which according to the makers is also much more reliable than existing examples of the technology. This flexible display technology can easily wrap itself around bracelets and other curved accessories, even having the flexibility to curve around the edge of a smartphone and continue working.

The screens are made using C-Axis Aligned Crystal (CAAC) film, which when wrapped around the edge of a smartphone also allows controls like volume and mute to be activated via the touchscreen, instead of having to rely on physical buttons. Wearable technology applications are also an exciting prospect because the OLED display can also achieve similar brightness and resolutions to existing flat display technology.
