Written In The Stars by AKQA is a mobile messaging site that lets people share holiday greetings in the sky.

The receiver of the message can view the sender’s greetings by holding their device up to the sky. The messages come with an original soundtrack by 3D from British musical group Massive Attack.

The site is tailored for iOS devices and created by combining several HTML 5 APIs — web audio, canvas, and device orientation. The orientation of the user’s device directly affects the audio and visual components of the whole experience.

To send a message, users need to visit the site and create their message from the mobile site by tapping on “Create.” After creating the message, users can share it through Twitter, Facebook, email or by sending a unique URL through SMS.

To read the message, users need to navigate a 3D star map and search for the North Star, which will help them reveal the message. The orientation and movement of the device triggers audio and visual cues that help lead the user to the North Star. When the user finds the North Star, the message is revealed and the original soundtrack by 3D starts playing.

Watch the demo video below to see how it works.
