Self-Balancing Skateboard Keeps Riders Accident Free [Video]

Single-wheeled skateboard is powered by complex algorithms and built-in sensors.

Start-up company Future Motion is pushing for a new kind of skateboard on Kickstarter. They have developed one that liberates riders from gravity. The Onewheel is a self-balancing electric board that offers an enhanced riding experience, similar to gliding over fresh mountain powder or a strong rolling wave.


Behind the simple concept and design of the board lies a very complex engineering system. Built-in sensors and key-component algorithms are the driving mechanisms that put balance and control into the hands of the rider. By leaning forward to speed up or backward to slow down, riders trigger the gyro and accelerometer sensors and the computer processor to determine speed and automatic steering. Powered by a 48v Lithium Nano-phosphate battery, Onewheel can be charged in as fast as 20 minutes, and can reach speeds of up to 12mph.


The project is still currently seeking funding but people who are willing to contribute $1,399 will be promised one of the early models, along with an Ultra Charger. You can find out more about the campaign here.
