Created by brothers Adam and Ben Long with front end Javascript, the Hemingway App is a new web editor that helps writers make their work “bold and clear,” as stated on the app’s website.

Users simply paste their text and the site will analyze it, focusing on making sentences clear and simple, eliminating adverbs and avoiding the passive voice — points that Ernest Hemingway considered the key things to creating good prose. The app uses an algorithm to analyze any piece of writing and then color-codes areas that may need improvement, and recommends replacement words of force.

Although it can’t be taken as a replacement for a human editor, the Hemingway app can be a good way for writers to check or review their work on their own, as well as be reminded of basic grammar or writing rules.
