Concept blind system Penumbra twists and shifts in three directions.

Architecture student Tyler Short has developed a concept blind system that he describes as a “kinetic and mechanical solution” to the problem of achieving the right amount of shading from the sun throughout the day.

Penumbra is a series of vertical window blinds designed to maximize shade throughout the day by pivoting horizontally and rotating upwards to become an extended horizontal shade when the sun is at a certain altitude and vertical blinds are no longer effective.

According to Short's description of the system, all the mechanical components and gear ratios were fully resolved so the system is a fully functioning manual or computer-operated system that not only provides maximum shade no matter what position the sun is in, but also adds an aesthetically pleasing element to a facade.
