Currently raising funds on Kickstarter, MicrobeScope is a pocket-sized microscope that lets people look at specimen magnified up to 800x on the screen of an iPhone.

Developed by 4D Optical, the MicrobeScope is a fixed focus instrument that can view sub 1 micron features of bacteria and other life forms. It can be used anywhere – at home, in school, on the field – and is simple enough for children to use. It doesn’t require glass slides and it doesn’t have knobs that need to be adjusted.

The specimen is placed directly on the inverted lens and a light source powered by an AAA battery provides the illumination for the specimen. Users will be able to view the specimen on their iPhone screens and, with the iPhone, take photos or videos and even share them.

The Kickstarter campaign for the device has already surpassed its goal with over 20 days to go in the campaign. Backers can pre-order a MicrobeScope for $135 and expect them to ship starting late June.
