MINI’s Roadster Concept Revives Age-Old Car Design Method
A one-of-a-kind roadster results from a partnership between MINI and an Italian coach builder.
For those that had the means to buy a car pre-Model T era, there was no dealership that you visited to buy an entire car. The process was a bit more complicated and involved purchasing a chassis and motor and then taking that to a coach builder who would create the exterior and interior pieces pretty much from scratch. There used to be many of these coach builders and each had their own distinct styling flair. Customers were rewarded with a car built exactly how they wanted it.
The modern day equivalent to a coach builder is the custom hot rod shop. But there are still a few of the old school coach builders that have survived in pure form. One of these is Touring Superleggera based in Milan, Italy since 1926. MINI partnered with the company on a project that brings together contemporary electric drive power with hand crafted design. The result is the MINI Superleggera™ Vision unveiled at the 2014 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este at Lake Como, Italy. The show is one of Europe’s most prestigious historic car gatherings.
