By emphasizing collaboration over competition, the music giant was able to ensure balanced female participation

The largest technology companies, including Amazon and Google, are known for having substantially more male employees than female. In a demonstrative gesture and slight protest, Spotify not only made 50/50 attendance at their hackathon a requirement, but revolved the entire Diversify event around it, acknowledging the well-known fact that mixing genders leads to better ideas.

A blog post on Spotify Labs rightfully acknowledges:

After organizing events for tech students over the last couple of years, it’s become clear that we’re doing something wrong when it comes to gender diversity: we’ve rarely managed to get a female/male ratio better than 15/85. We refused to settle for this and decided to explore why this was the case and what we could do to improve gender diversity at our events.
