Merger may spell big changes for wireless charging industry

The tangled mess where you charge your devices has taken a step toward being slightly less tangled with this week’s announcement of a merger between the Power Matters Alliance (PMA) and The Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP). The two wireless charging standard groups have signed a Letter of Intent for a merger to be finalized this year under a name that is yet to be decided or announced.

Both groups are consortiums that work on international industry standards so consumers can expect some degree of consistency in charging techniques, wattage and experience and developers can build synergistically rather than reinventing the wheel with each new entry into the field. Such groups also add stability to their industries, which encourages investment and fosters growth.
