When I was growing up, Barbie was always a very basic conversationalist. We shared favorite colors, favorite school subjects and future aspirations. These one-way engagements typically shifted to reflect my current interests of childhood.

In late August, a Barbie will begin to have opinions and dreams of her own. Mattel has teamed up with startup ToyTalk to launch an Internet-connected doll called Hello Barbie and bring imaginary conversations to life. The toy will not only be able to talk for hours, but also understand and respond to speech using speech recognition technology.
