Dutch firm MVRDV designed the 'Turm Mit Taille' tower for Vienna, which twists to open up views of the city

Dutch architectural firm MVRDV has won a design competition to build a multi-use tower for Vienna. The ‘Turm mit Taille’ (which translates as ‘tower with waist’) will be located near the Gasometers, four large repurposed gas tanks in the city, which is an area in need of urban regeneration.

Construction is due to begin next year on the skyscraper, which twists to create an hourglass-like form. This twist shaping the lower ten floors of the building minimizes the structure’s shadow cast onto neighboring facades to only two hours a day. Winy Maas, co-founder of MVRDV, said:
