The Pebble Time is poised to be one of the most successful (and rapidly funded) Kickstarter campaigns in history

Almost three years ago, at the naissance of smartwatch technology, then-unknown company Pebble Technologies crowdfunded its e-paper watch, simply known as the Pebble. Launched on Kickstarter with an original funding goal of $100,000, the Pebble raised over $10 million and the no-frills smartwatch became the darling of both the wearable industry and crowdfunding community.

Pebble’s influence in both fields is still felt, and leveraged, today. Early this morning, Pebble launched its third-generation smartwatch, the Pebble Time, on Kickstarter—a move that is both a nod to the company’s crowdfunding roots and a promotional strategy to stay relevant within a growing wearable market. The Pebble Time reached its fundraising goal of $500,000 within 17 minutes of publication, and at time of writing has raised over $3.4 million.
