Sparkplug seeks to become the Airbnb for musical instruments

Many musicians would love access to a specific instrument or piece of gear for a day or two. But on limited incomes, buying one isn’t always an option. Sparkplug is an online community marketplace for musicians and artists looking to change that. It allows its members to rent creative tools like instruments, gear and practice space to each other.

The New York-based startup functions much like Airbnb. Users create free listings for items such as guitars, amps or practice spaces and set prices at anything from hourly to monthly rates. The free listings typically include photos, a calendar of availability, general location and detailed descriptions of the condition of the gear. The company collects a service fee only when a reservation is made.
