Curtis Hougland: We Like L.A. Because it Reminds Us of Social Media
Founder and CEO of Attention on the myriad ways the City of Angels evokes our celestial ties to the connected web
Los Angeles is one of the most social cities in America. This observation may surprise Angelenos, who willfully eschew HOV lanes on their long solo commutes each day. Or rather, L.A. is the physical place most like social media. L.A. is a metaphor for the entirety of social media.
The City of Angels is not a single city, after all. It is a dozen distinct communities sprawling over beaches, hills and deserts. Each community is its own ecosystem interconnected by a series of freeways mimicking the computer language of 1s and 0s (with an odd 5 here and there). And while The Walt Disney Concert Hall injects some energy downtown, L.A. lacks a true epicenter.
