Airline Icelandair has launched an Aurora Borealis-themed plane with an exterior reminiscent of the northern lights and mood lighting throughout the main cabin.

Hekla Aurora (‘Hekla’ is a traditional Icelandic girl’s name and ‘Aurora’ is a reference to the northern lights) was created as part of the airline’s #MyStopover campaign, which encourages passengers to enjoy a stopover in Iceland for up to seven nights at no additional airfare on their way between Europe and North America.

The new theme is fitting as the aircraft flies the northern lights across the Atlantic every day of the year. It was chosen because Iceland is one of the best places to catch them in the northern hemisphere. Hekla Aurora features an illuminated interior with mood lighting that recreates the stunning display of the Aurora Borealis, providing passengers with a unique on board experience.

An LED lighting system has been installed to display the northern lights throughout the main cabin, ensuring those who travel on the airplane get to see what they look like even if they aren’t lucky enough to see the natural phenomena in person. A Wi-Fi connection on board enables passengers to post their photos of the event in real-time.

The Boeing 757 has also been wrapped in new Aurora Borealis-themed livery, with the exterior depicting the beautiful colors of an Icelandic winter landscape. A team of artists painted the colorful design onto the entire plane. Local expert Birta Lif Kristinsdottir, a renowned Icelandic meteorologist and former Icelandair pilot who was present at the launch, said:

“Hekla Aurora provides an authentic Aurora Borealis experience to all those who fly on her. The on-board light show provides the perfect beginning to any transatlantic flight by showcasing the natural beauty of Iceland’s famous northern lights.”
