Designer Ashley Heather reimagines information tech into eco-friendly accessories

A model who sports Ashley Heather jewelry might seem as if she’s showing off your average gold band or string of necklaces. In actuality, the quality of product is anything but average: the handcrafted line of goods are simple and elegant everyday wears refurbished from circuit boards.

The designer, who works out of a studio in South Africa, describes the manufacturing process in which she turns defective gadgets into clothing as “urban mining.” Inspired by all of the excess waste of electronic products, of which 80-85 percent are discarded in landfills or incinerators, Heather looked to sustainable practices that utilize the parts in novel ways.
