SXSW is a power suck—without an external battery charger or a charge cord and a nearby outlet, kiss your precious battery life goodbye. Sans portable battery charger, my iPhone was well into the red zone by the time I got to my meeting with fashion designer Pauline van Dongen.

We could've huddled into the dark corners of a bar so that I could plug into a wall outlet, but it was too loud, so we found a sunny courtyard out back. Whereas I might usually trade in sun-drenched patios for LED-lit rooms for the sake of a wall outlet, this time I didn't have to—I just plugged my iPhone into Pauline's shirt.
