Moon Phases is a design project that merges old astronomy with new technology

Moon Phases is an interactive physical turntable that allows you to visualize the moon's phases as they appear from Earth on any given date.

The project has two, created by designers Yingjie Bei and Yifan Hu, has two components: the physical turntable and an app for computers and smart phones.

The turntable uses three encoders, one each for the month, year and day, which send a signal to an Arduino mega chip at the center of its console. The chip will control the rotation of the turntable and an LED lighting display shows where the sun would have hit the moon on that date, and how much could be seen from earth.
