GE's forward-thinking shopping spaces will communicate with shoppers through pulsating lights

GE and Qualcomm Atheros have an interesting idea: LED lights that can talk to your phone. The technology won’t be hard to install. In fact, they’ll fit inside commercial lightbulbs. The new bulbs will be equipped to flash changes in lighting imperceptible to the human eye but readable through a smartphone app.

A connection will then be built between the phone and low-energy Bluetooth channels on the bulb. The result? A way of pinpointing a customer’s location in the shopping space. Shoppers can also unlock special promotions or discounts as they reach different aisles inside the store.
