The Lowline is prototyping novel solar tech for a spacious, underground greenhouse

The Lowline is an initiative converting an early 1900s underground trolley terminal in New York City’s Lower East Side neighborhood into an acre-wide park and historical monument. Public parks with lush greens may just find space underneath New York’s megacity.

The team behind The Lowline hopes to make the dream plausible by developing an ingenious way of transporting sunlight. Using high-grade mirrors for collection and tubes that deliver them to virtually anywhere, the underground venue will be illuminated using natural sunlight, allowing leafy fauna to survive several feet underground.
