To honor Bowie, an augmented reality app turns you into Ziggy Stardust

Blippar, the image recognition and augmented reality app that displays related content for pictures, is paying tribute to David Bowie by enabling its users to create an image of themselves as one of his personas.

Bowie died on January 10th after an 18-month battle with cancer and many fans have been finding different ways to pay tribute to the influential musician.

Those who download the app can simply ‘blipp’ an iconic image of Bowie or the mural of the rock star in his hometown of Brixton to get started. They can then add the distinctive red-and-blue lightning bolt make-up along with the red hair Bowie is seen sporting on the cover of his sixth album, Aladdin Sane. Blippar overlays the bolt of lightning across the person’s face and adds the red hair to their picture so they have a selfie that looks like Bowie’s Aladdin Sane character, a somewhat fleshed-out version of the iconic Ziggy Stardust persona.
