Mail Delivery Takes to the Finnish Skies
A four-day experiment using robotic helicopters shows a glimpse of what future postal services might be
Back in September, Posti, the Finnish national postal company, held an experiment using a drone to deliver parcels to a remote location. The experiment was a success as Posti executives learned more about the pros and cons of using drones as a delivery tool.
The experiment lasted for four days and the drone’s travel route was between Helsinki and Suomenlinna island. The robotic helicopters only carried 3 kg parcels, while the traditional letters were delivered by boat.
Posti Senior Vice President Jukka Rosenberg believed that using drones can offer faster deliveries as well as a more cost-effective approach to parcel delivery. Rosenberg wanted to see the experiment firsthand to check the effectiveness and capability of drones to successfully deliver parcels in the right location.
