Training wheels for the emoji-illiterate

SpeakEmoji is a new app that makes no bones about its target audience.

The Android and iPhone app, which translates speech into emojis, claims to translate “grown-up speak into cool emoji messages in an effort to curb the communication gap between adults and digital natives.”

A YouTube video promoting the app features a hopelessly unhip British gent unsuccessfully attempting to connect to his disinterested teenage son through modern slang.

The app, produced by digital agency SapientNitro, uses a device's integrated microphone to recognize speech, then outputs that speech as a string of emojis that can be shared via Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, SMS or email. The recipient has the option to decipher the emoji phrase on their own, or let the app do it.
