Are these Glasgow subway trains the end of conductors?

When we think ‘autonomous vehicles,’ we’re usually talking about driverless cars. While pilots have traditionally flown with much assistance from their auto-piloting counterparts, and trains run on an invariable tack that seemingly needs little assistance, there still doesn’t exist a foolproof method to automating these particular vehicles—though we’re well on our way to making this dream a reality.

In Glasgow, a Scottish city home to the third oldest subway line in the world, Swiss firm Stradler has been awarded the honor of redesigning its below-the-surface transportation for a more comfortable ride, while the task of refurbishing the signaling system has been assigned to Italian-based transportation firm Andler. Most notably, the Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT)-backed companies are looking to remove the need for conductors to enable an enhanced journey, complete with improved frequency and availability.
