Explore The Red Planet In A Yellow School Bus
Lockheed Martin inspires the next generation of explorers with an out-of-this-world experience
It is believed that the first astronauts to Mars will arrive on the planet before today’s kindergarteners graduate college. To help school-age children think about the possibilities of going to Mars Lockheed Martin has created a one-of-a-kind bus that will transport them to the Red Planet to see what it looks like and to learn more about its reddish wonders.
As part of Lockheed Martin Generation Beyond initiative, whose goal is to “inspire the next generation of innovators, explorers, inventors and pioneers to pursue STEM careers,” the bus experience is meant to plant the seed of curiosity for a possible career in aerospace technology. The Mars Experience isn’t the only Generation Beyond project. The project has a number of initiatives including a free deep space curriculum available to all middle school teachers and has an app that sends you real-time Mars weather reports.
The Mars Experience bus gives students an immersive augmented reality adventure stimulating a ride on the surface of Mars. The bus adventure shows 200 square miles of the planet’s surface on the boarded-up windows. The virtual experience was built with the same software engine used for modern video games, which translates to immersive graphics. The high-tech bus will be touring the United States, giving students from different regions the chance to try it out.
