New Yorkers might have noticed a house with steam coming out its chimney in their streets

Manholes are the type of objects that city commuters often overlook (unless they are being a nuisance). But artist Mark Reigelman II wants to bring attention to these manholes in a whimsical, unexpected way.

Smökers features a mobile home that the artist placed over manholes, making the steam look like smoke coming out of the home’s chimney.

So instead of being an annoying part of city life, the manholes become a means of activating an object that provides a little break from the ordinary. The insertion of the houses breaks up the monotony of the city and offers a new way for citizens to experience public space.
